What's new
Everything that changed on BoardGameNights lately.
Boardgamenights in Dutch and French
- The site is now in English, Dutch and French. You can switch language at the top of the page, in the footer or on My Account, and pick one when you sign up.
- Emails and notifications go out in the language you picked. Messages people write themselves stay in the language they wrote them in.
BoardGameGeek import, play dates and push notifications
- You can import your BoardGameGeek collection. Go to My Boardgames, enter your BGG username, and your owned games go into I own and your want to play games into I want to play. You can also bring in your wishlist if you want.
- On the Requested page you can now say which dates you're free to play, whatever the game. Others can see who's free on a date and host something that day. If someone does, you get a notification.
- There's a weekly summary email on Thursday with your events for the coming week and events that still have spots. It's off by default, you can turn it on under My notifications and then Email preferences.
- You can get push notifications on your phone or computer. Turn them on under My notifications. On iPhone you first need to add the site to your home screen.
- You can pick a colour and write a short bio in My Profile. Your initials show up in that colour next to your name, and others see your bio when they hover over it.
- Events with more than one game let you swipe through the images of all their games.
- Searching should find games and events even when you make a typo.
A new look
- Mostly cosmetic changes this time. The site and the emails got a new look, with fewer buttons everywhere and a cleaner layout.
New event emails, winners and event tags
- You can get an email when someone hosts a new event. You can limit it to the cities or zip codes you care about, or leave it empty to hear about everything. To turn it on, go to My notifications and then Email preferences.
- You can also get a notification when someone hosts a game from your Want to play list. You can turn that on in the same place.
- Hosts can now pick a winner for each game on the event page. The leaderboard shows the winners overall and split into light, medium and heavy games.
- When you join, you can say if you've never played the game, played it before or can teach it. It shows as a small icon on your badge, so the host knows who needs the rules explained.
- Hosts can add tags to an event, like beginner friendly, free parking or what's allowed for drinks and snacks. You can filter on them when browsing.
- Browse has a list view now, a few quick filters, and a "Show more" button instead of loading everything at once.
- The homepage shows events in groups like Last spots, This week and Just posted.
- Event descriptions can have links, bold, italic and bullet lists. There's a small toolbar and a preview to help.
- When you pick games while hosting, the number of spots gets suggested based on the games' max players.
- The host form won't let you plan an event that overlaps with one you're already hosting or joined.
- You can invite someone to an event by email or share the link from your phone.
- Messages on the event board can be longer now.
- You can delete your own account from My Account. If you're still hosting an upcoming event, you'll need to cancel it first. If you joined upcoming events, you'll leave those tables. Past events stay as they are, only your name gets anonymized.
Google login and event message boards
- You can now log in with your Google account.
- Every event has a message board now. Only the host and the people who joined can see it, so you can sort out who brings snacks or let everyone know you're running late. Messages get removed a week after the event.
- Events used to disappear from Browse as soon as they started. Now they stay up until they're actually over.
- Searching for games when you host an event should be faster now.
- Pages should load a bit faster in general, and I fixed a few bugs that made some pages crash.
Want to play and game requests
- There's a Want to play list next to the games you own, so you can keep track of games you'd like to try.
- You can ask for someone to host a game with the request button on any game card. When someone hosts an event with a game you requested, you get an email.
- The Requested page shows which games people want to play and who asked for them, so hosts can pick something people are waiting for.
- Events you hosted have a Host again button that fills in the host form for you.
- You can add a new location right from the host form.
- Browse has a "With my games" filter and a switch to look at past events.
